Why Zantac Is Facing A Lawsuit
News about the recall of every single ranitidine drug available on the market shocked the entire country. The news itself came from an order issued by the US Food & Drug Administration (FDA). Ranitidine, commonly known as Zantac, has been widely available for Americans suffering from heartburn since it was first introduced to the public in the early 1980s. Since then, millions of Americans have relied on it to give them relief from such an uncomfortable medical condition.
As a result, Zantac’s sales improved dramatically, and it became the first drug to receive over USD$1 billion in sales. Zantac was considered to be a wonder drug by many and there were no significant problems about it. But everything changed in the fall of 2019, when the FDA issued an order to recall the drug from the market. That huge number of sales that we were just talking about? It came at the cost of human life for some who took the drug. This prompted many patients who were taking the drug to reach out to Zantac lawyers to know what legal recourse they should take.
In this article, we’ll be talking about why Zantac is now facing lawsuits from people who were taking the drug.
Zantac Has Been Found To Cause Cancer
The biggest reason Zantac has been recalled and is now facing a huge number of lawsuits is because it has been found to cause cancer.
The FDA recalled the drug because it found that Zantac may be dangerous for many people. It was discovered that Zantac contains an unacceptable amount of a contaminant called N-Nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA.) But actually, NDMA is more than just a contaminant—it is also a carcinogen that increases the risk of cancer in people.
According to FDA regulations, humans should never consume more than 96 nanograms of NDMA each day. Zantac, on the other hand, contains over 3,000,000 nanograms of NDMA per tablet. It’s worth noting that some patients who are using Zantac take the drug for as many as three to four tablets a day, which is quite alarming.
Aside from that, it has been found that the levels of NDMA found in each tablet can grow over time due to certain factors. All of this evidence was too much to be ignored by the FDA and it forced them to issue a recall immediately as a means of protecting Zantac users from the potential risk of cancer.
Zantac Manufacturers Ignored The Potential Health Hazards Caused By NDMA
It was also reported that Zantac manufacturers chose to ignore the potential health hazards of NDMA even though they were well aware that it can cause cancer when the drug was first introduced to the market. Drug manufacturers are legally required to warn patients about the potential risks of the drugs they take, and remove or not place these drugs on the market at all if they’re found to be a health hazard.
Now, Zantac users are filing lawsuits against the drug manufacturers for not fulfilling this duty, which legally puts them at risk. Zantac users who were subsequently diagnosed with cancer can file an injury claim against the manufacturers and are recommended to contact Zantac lawyers as soon as possible.
Zantac Users Are Now Seeking Compensation
Although a filing a lawsuit isn’t going to reverse the damage done by the drug—especially after being diagnosed with cancer as a result of taking Zantac—it can still be a life-saver for those who were affected. For instance, personal injury lawsuits seek compensation for damages such as medical expenses and loss of wages. The compensation a victim will receive may help them afford better quality medical care from doctors, specialists, and other healthcare professionals.
Other compensation they might be eligible to receive encompass:
- Mental anguish
- Pain and suffering
- Unhappiness and losing the ability to make the most out of life
- Loss of consortium
Living a life with cancer or any other type of health issue is certainly not easy, especially if you know you could have done something to avoid it, have you been properly warned by the pharmaceutical companies that are selling the drugs before using the medication that caused it.
What to Do Now
Make no mistake—Zantac was once an FDA-approved medication. Once FDA okays a medication, Americans trust that the drug will be safe for use. But when the FDA issued a recall order for Zantac, millions of Americans are now worried that they might have developed cancer because of the drug. If you or someone you love has suffered or even died because of cancer due to Zantac use, the best thing you can do now is to consult an attorney as soon as possible.
